The Symposium was held at The Collaroy Centre on Sydney's Northern Beaches, minutes away world famous Manly, Narrabeen Beach and Palm Beaches.

A key feature of the conference was getting out and hitting the sand to discover the ground breaking research and education initiatives that are occuring around the world. It was a unique opportunity to work with the world best scientists! Below is a the field trip brief to give a flavour of the experience.

 

Field Trip Brief – Long Reef Beach

Time

1600 - 1730

Travel to venue

At the conclusion of afternoon tea (1600), delegates will be asked to enjoy the brief walk down to Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club (directions to be provided).

Round trip will be approx. 4km

Activity

Coordinators:

Dr Rob Brander (UNSW), Andrew Short (U Syd.) and Anthony Bradstreet (SLSA)

Primary: Dye release and rip drifter demonstration

Following presentations during the day, Dr Rob Brander will be providing an insight into the RIPSAFE project (as seen in Physical rip current science session I). This will include practical dye release and rip current drifter demonstrations.

Alternative: Long Reef Headland walk

Those who wish to see more of the sights, can enjoy a walk around the Long Reef Headland, which will provide fantastic coastal views and allow delegates to enjoy some of Sydney’s local flora and fauna.

Travel back to venue

At the conclusion of the activity (between 1700 and 1730), delegates are to make their way back to the primary venue and their accommodation. Dinner will commence at 1900 (venue to be confirmed).

Safety Information

There is a lifeguard service in operation until 1700 at this location. If you choose to swim during the field trip activity, please swim between the red and yellow flags.

Entering the water is not intended to be a part of delegate activity. If delegates choose to, they do so at their own risk.
